A new Spidey has been chosen to replace the ever-generic Toby McGuire in whatever remakes of the Spider-Man film series Marvel Studios has decided it will unleash upon Americans in the next two years.
Actor, Andrew Garfield was chosen, I assume for his unassuming demeanor, his lack of superhero physique or bone structure, and the silky brown hair that grows from his head and face even though he looks just shy of seventeen.
Spiderman has never been the specimen of masculinity that Superman is, although he does display superhuman strength. And while Spiderman does have a tumultuous past (I think that's why he lives with his grandparents) he has never achieved the brooding anger of the Dark Knight. Spiderman/Peter Parker does display an acute intelligence, the trademark of a great superhero, but it's arguable whether or not he exploits this trait to the best of his abilities.
All in all, Spiderman is a good superhero for the average kid, the kid that dreams of saving the day, fighting hard and rescuing the girl, but still can't make the basketball team. Peter Parker is the average kid that just accidentally got bitten by a radioactive spider on a field trip, no biggie.
So, when Director Mark Webb chose Andrew Garfield to play the friendly neighborhood superhero, I assume he passed on the bigger names because he was really looking for a Peter Parker, and like the Tobey McGuire movies, will count on CGI to do the rest.
